What to Know Before Visiting Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is Portugal’s capital city, located on the southeast corner of Portugal and west of mainland Europe. Lisbon sits on the Iberian Peninsula, where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
👀 What is Lisbon known for
Lisbon has a rich history & culture that blends Moorish influences with modern European style. It’s known for its delicious seafood, most notably bacalhau (salted cod), as well as signature pastries such as pasteis de nata, a Portuguese custard tart. Lisbon is also known for its architecture, unique historic center, and ceramic tiles.
☀️ When to visit Lisbon
The best time to visit Lisbon is either from March – June or September – October, while the weather is warm but not too hot with limited rainfall, and while hotel rates are lower than during the summer high tourist season of June – August.
📅 How long to visit Lisbon
For first-time visitors, the ideal amount of time to spend in Lisbon is 3-4 days to see most (if not all) of the iconic sites, while also allowing for time to take a day trip to nearby areas like Sintra or Cascais. 1-2 days is a bit short, and 5-7 or even 7+ days will allow you to tack on more places to explore in Lisbon like Porto or the Algarve coast.
✈️ How to get to Lisbon
To arrive in Lisbon fly into the Humberto Delgado Airport, informally Lisbon Airport. From there, you can easily take a train to Sintra, Porto, the Algarve coast, and other destinations in Portugal.
🚗 How to get around Lisbon
While quite hilly (imagine it to be a bit like San Francisco), Lisbon is easily walkable and easy to navigate as well. Lisbon also has an extensive public transit system, including metro, buses, trams, and funiculars (elevators), of which the metro is the fastest and most efficient mode to get around the city. There are also plenty of tours to see the city, including by tuktuk!
🏠️ Where to stay in Lisbon
The most historic and romantic place to stay in Lisbon is in the stunning Alfama district. However, there are limited hotel options, and the narrow streets are harder to navigate with luggage, so an easier stay is in Chiado, which is central to many of the neighborhoods in Lisbon, while the most affordable stays are in the more modern Baixa.
20+ Best Things to do in Lisbon, Portugal for First-Time Visitors

1. Visit the Belem Tower

2. Walk Along Pink Street
Pink Street, also known as Rua Nova do Carvalho, is a bright pink lane in the middle of Lisbon’s nightlife in the bustling Cais do Sodre neighborhood. Brightly colored umbrellas line the top of the street, making for quite a sight, welcoming you to the bars and clubs of the area. Visit for the photos during the day and come back at night to party!

3. Ride the Iconic Lisbon Funicular

4. Take in a Sunrise at Miradouro de Santa Luzia
On your list of things to do in Lisbon, put watching a sunrise or sunset at one of Lisbon’s iconic view points at the top! Miradouro de Santa Luzia, a beautiful ceramic tile decorated terrace, looks over Alfama district and is one of the most popular viewpoints of the city. This popularity does mean it will be JAM-PACKED at sunset! Make sure to arrive extra early for sunset, or to avoid the worst of the crowds, my top tip is to come at sunrise when there are less visitors to share the view with. After sunrise, make sure to walk over and enjoy the views from Miradouro Portas de Sol as well!

5. See the Arched Corridors at Praca do Comercio
The Praca do Comercio is a large, harbor-facing plaza with stunning architecture and unforgettable arched corridors. This is one of the largest squares in Europe and it is well-worth a visit! On certain weekends in summer, you might even be treated to a local art market, which was one of my favorite experiences!

6. Go on a Lisbon Walking Tour

7. Try Pastéis de Nata at its Birthplace

8. Watch a Sunset at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
If you’re wondering which viewpoint to watch a stunning Lisbon sunset from, look no further than Miradouro da Senhora do Monte! Located in a churchyard, this spot is the highest point in the local neighborhood and offers panoramic views of the city, all the way down to the river waters below. It’s also a much larger viewpoint than some of the others in the city – so while this viewpoint will still undoubtedly be packed at sunset (arrive EXTRA early!), there is a lot more room to spread out and still get epic views. My top tip: bring a pizza & drinks and have a picnic while taking in the views!

9. Explore the Alfama District & The São Jorge Castle

10. Go to a Live Fado Show with Dinner

11. See the Carmo Convent Ruins
The Carmo Convent, also known as The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is a former Catholic convent that, like so much else of Lisbon, was ruined in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. The convent’s origins can be traced back to the late 14th century and it is truly one of Lisbon’s most beautiful sights. There are several archaeological relics housed in its museum, but seeing the ruins alone is honestly worth it. When I visited, parts of the convent were under repair & restoration, but it is safe and open to visit.

12. Take a Wine Tour

13. Shop at Ler Devagar Bookstore
Need book ideas?

14. Drink Coffee at a Historic Lisbon Café

15. Take a Food Tour Around Lisbon

16. See the Lisbon Cathedral

17. Ride the Santa Justa Lift
The Santa Justa Lift connects central Lisbon’s lower streets to the much higher Largo do Carmo. It is also the quickest way to get from the Baixa neighborhood to the Bairro Alto district! Riding this iconic lift is a great way to avoid some of the most steep hills in Lisbon, while also having a unique experience with an epic view.

18. Visit the National Tile Museum

19. Enjoy the Beach at Cascais

20. Take a Day Trip to Sintra
