Best Places for Summer in Europe: 11 Destinations You Do NOT Want to Miss from Iconic Musts to Underrated Gems

What to Know Before Visiting Europe in Summer

Before we dive into the destinations, there are a few things worth knowing before you book that flight:

🇪🇺 Summer in Europe – particularly July and August – is PEAK season across the continent. That means higher prices, larger crowds at the major sights, and accommodation that books up incredibly fast. My top tip? Book as far in advance as you possibly can, especially if you’re planning to visit the most popular spots like Santorini, the Amalfi Coast, or Cinque Terre.

☀️ The weather across Europe in summer varies more than you might expect. Southern destinations like Greece, southern Spain, and Portugal can hit serious heat – we’re talking 35°C (95°F) and above in peak summer. If you’re not a fan of extreme temperatures, leaning into a “coolcation” (more on that later!) or choosing northern destinations like Iceland can be a total game-changer.

✍️ It’s also worth noting that some of the lesser-known destinations on this list – Albania and Montenegro in particular – are growing fast in popularity. They still offer incredible value for money compared to their Western European neighbors, but that is starting to change, so now really is the time to visit. I’d highly recommend not sleeping on these two destinations – they are genuinely some of the most beautiful places I have ever set eyes on.

💰 If you’re an American reader planning a summer trip to Europe, do keep exchange rates (the Euro for most of Europe) and travel insurance in mind. World Nomads is my go-to for travel insurance that covers adventure activities – do NOT skip this step, especially if you’re planning water sports, hiking, or any kind of physical activity on your trip – and SafetyWing is my go-to for solo travelers.

🚆 It’s pretty easy to get around in most European countries thanks to their stellar public transportation systems – and for multi-European country hopping, you can’t go wrong with getting a rail pass or buying individual train tickets. But if you want more flexibility (like a road trip in Iceland), grabbing a rental car can help you explore more of the hidden corners.

1) Italy: Cinque Terre & the Amalfi Coast

If there’s one country that practically DEFINES European summer, it’s Italy. And when it comes to the best places for summer in Europe, two regions sit right at the top of every bucket list – Cinque Terre in the north and the Amalfi Coast in the south. Both are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, both are incredibly different in character, and both are absolutely worth visiting if you can swing it.

Cinque Terre is a string of five colorful fishing villages clinging to dramatic cliffs along the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy. The hiking trails that connect the villages are some of the most scenic in all of Europe – nothing quite prepares you for that first view of Vernazza or Manarola from above. The villages themselves are car-free, which gives the whole area a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere once the day-trippers have gone home. I’d highly recommend staying overnight in one of the villages rather than visiting as a day trip – waking up to the sound of the sea with no crowds in sight is an experience you simply cannot put a price on.

The Amalfi Coast, on the other hand, is all drama and glamour. Winding coastal roads, pastel-colored towns stacked up hillsides, and some of the most beautiful sea views you’ll ever see in your life. Positano is the most photographed and – fair warning – the most crowded, but places like Ravello and Praiano offer that same incredible scenery with far fewer tourists. Do not miss a boat trip along the coast – seeing it from the water is an entirely different experience and honestly one of my favorite memories from Italy.

Tips for Visiting Europe in Summer

  • Book early – and I mean EARLY. Accommodation at the most popular summer destinations in Europe fills up months in advance, and flight prices increase significantly as you get closer to peak season. If you have a fixed travel window, try to lock in your flights and at least your first and last nights of accommodation as soon as you can.

  • Travel shoulder season if you can be flexible. Late May, early June, and September are genuinely wonderful times to visit most European destinations – the weather is still warm and settled, the crowds are noticeably thinner, and accommodation prices drop considerably. For destinations like Cinque Terre, Santorini, and the Amalfi Coast, visiting outside of July and August makes an enormous difference to the overall experience.

  • Pack for the heat – but also for the unexpected. Even the hottest European summer destinations can have cool evenings, especially in coastal areas with sea breezes. A lightweight layer and a pair of comfortable walking shoes are always worth the extra space in your bag. And if you’re heading to Iceland or the Swiss Alps, bring a proper waterproof jacket regardless of the time of year – mountain weather changes fast.

  • Get travel insurance. I know it feels like an extra expense when you’re already stretching a budget for flights and accommodation, but it is absolutely non-negotiable, especially if you’re planning any kind of adventure activity – hiking, water sports, cycling, sailing. SafetyWing is my personal go-to for comprehensive, affordable travel insurance that actually covers the kind of activities solo adventure travelers get up to.

  • Embrace a slower pace. One of the biggest mistakes travelers make in Europe in summer is trying to pack too much in. The places on this list are best enjoyed slowly – lingering over a long lunch, taking the scenic route, staying an extra night in a place that captures your heart. Summer is truly the very best season to slow down and soak it all in.
