15 Most Beautiful Places in the Dolomites: the Stunning Mountains of Italy

Quick-start guide to the Dolomites

⛰️ What are the Dolomites?

The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, part of the Southern Limestone Alps. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, it’s a popular place for tourism, hiking, and skiing.

🕰️ When to visit the Dolomites

For the best hiking season, visit the Dolomites in late June to September. In October, many trails and cable cars close as it begins to snow. For skiing, visit the Dolomites from December through early March.

✈️ How to get to the Dolomites

The closest international airports to the Dolomites are the Milano Malpensa Airport and the Marco Polo International Airport in Venice. Milan is about 4 hours drive away, and Venice is about 3 hours drive away. The closest local airport is Bolzano Airport in Bolzano, which is just under an hour from the Dolomites. Whichever airport you chose to fly into, I’d recommend renting a car to drive to, through, and from the Dolomites.

🚗 How to get around in the Dolomites

The best way to get around in the Dolomites is by car. There are also local buses in the area, but for ease of transport, car is best. Note: many places in the Dolomites have limited parking lots so arrive early!

📅 How long to visit the Dolomites

How long to visit the Dolomites really depends on your plans. For sightseeing, 3 days is sufficient, but if you’re wanting to hike and see more of the area, 5-7 days is ideal. For an in-depth trip to see it ALL, try visiting for 7-10 days.

💬 What language is spoken in the Dolomites

Surprisingly to tourists unfamiliar with the area, many locals actually speak German as the Dolomites used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. You will still encounter Italian as well, and since it’s a touristy area, there are a lot of locals who are able to speak English. But it’s always best to learn a bit of the local language – and it’s helpful to download the local language offline on Google translate.

💰 What currency is used in the Dolomites

As the Dolomites are in Italy, which is part of the European Union, the currency used is the euro.

🏠 Best places to stay in the Dolomites

The best places to stay in the Dolomites are Bolzano, Ortisei, Cortina D’Ampezzo, Val Gardena, and Val di Funes.

For basing yourself on the west half of the Dolomites, I’d recommend Ortisei, and for basing yourself on the east half of the Dolomites, I’d recommend Cortina D’Ampezzo. Both of these towns are small; so make sure to book FAR in advance of your trip! If you miss out on accommodation, try Bolzano for the west half and Val Gardena or Val di Funes for the east half.

Tip: put your favorites of these most beautiful places in Dolomites into Google maps, and either base yourself in whichever town is closest to the bulk of your Google map pins, OR split your time between two destinations (which is what I did!).
