Where to Stay in Rovaniemi, Finland: The Best Aurora Hotels, Glass Igloos, & More

If you’ve ever dreamed of watching the Northern Lights from a cozy glass igloo or waking up to snow-covered forests straight out of a storybook – then Rovaniemi, Finland is the place to make that dream come true. Trust me, you’ll be happy you decided to trade in a tropical paradise trip for a snowy, winter wonderland trip.

Located right on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the official hometown of Santa Claus (yes, really!) and a gateway to Lapland’s wild beauty. Whether you’re chasing the aurora, planning a winter wonderland getaway, or visiting Santa’s Village for Christmas, this charming Finnish city has a surprisingly wide range of stays – from luxury igloos to budget-friendly cabins.

Let’s dive into where to stay in Rovaniemi, as well as my personal favorite hotels from my 2-week Finland trip, the best areas to stay, and tips for visiting Rovaniemi in winter. Let’s find your perfect Arctic base!

What to Know Before Visiting Rovaniemi, Finland

📍 Where is Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi is in far north Finland, in Europe. It is north of Helsinki, and considered to be a part of Finnish Lapland.

📅 How long to visit Rovaniemi
I’d recommend 3–5 days to experience the highlights – a Northern Lights tour, Santa Claus Village, and some winter adventures like husky or reindeer safaris. But if you’re determined to see the aurora, I’d recommend 5-7 days for more chances of clear skies and high aurora activity.

❄️ When to visit Rovaniemi

The best time to visit Rovaniemi really depends on what you’re hoping to experience (although in this guide I focus on where to stay in Rovaniemi in winter!):

  • December to February – peak winter magic! Snow-covered landscapes, Northern Lights season, and all the Christmas charm you could dream of. It’s also the most popular (and pricey) time to visit.
  • March to April – still snowy, but longer daylight hours. Great for skiing and aurora hunting with fewer crowds.
  • May to August – summer in Lapland! Think hiking trails, the midnight sun, and vibrant greenery.
  • September to November – autumn colors and the return of the Northern Lights. A wonderful time for a quieter, more local experience.

🌟 When to visit Rovaniemi to see the Northern Lights

If you’re planning to chase the aurora, aim for late September through early April – that’s when skies are darkest and activity is strongest.

❇️ Can you see the Northern Lights from Rovaniemi city center?

Sometimes! But your best chances are just outside the city where it’s darker – places like Apukka Resort or the Arctic SnowHotel are ideal.

🌨️ What is the weather like in Rovaniemi in winter

Winter in Rovaniemi is definitively cold and snowy; with the average temperature around 32° F or 0°C, but it can get as cold as 4° F or -15°C at night (in January) and as warm as 32° F or 0°C during the day (in March). Tip: pack multiple layers and opt for wool over cotton clothing.

✈️ How to get to Rovaniemi & Finnish Lapland
The easiest and quickest way to get to Rovaniemi is by flying into the Rovaniemi airport, which you can get to by first flying into the Helsinki Airport. If you have a bit more time and want to save on airfare, fly to Helsinki and take a bus to Rovaniemi OR the magical overnight Santa Claus Express train.

🚗Do you need a car in Rovaniemi?

Not necessarily. Many hotels offer airport transfers and tour pickups, and if you’re staying in the city center for activities it’s all pretty walkable. But if you want to explore beyond town or chase the aurora on your own, renting a car is a good idea.

My favorite hotels in Rovaniemi

💎 Luxury: Apukka Resort  – offers everything from glass igloos to Aurora cabins and winter adventures right onsite (husky dog sled rides, sauna, and snowmobile safaris). I stayed about 3 nights here and wish I had spent even more time!

💰 Mid-Budget: Arctic Light Hotel – a chic boutique hotel in the city center with cozy rooms and one of the best breakfasts in town. It’s easy to get to from the airport (I stayed here my first & last nights) and is a perfect base to explore Rovaniemi city center by foot.

💸 Budget: Santa Claus Holiday Village – spacious cabins and apartments steps away from Santa’s office. Great value for families and couples alike AND you’ll be able to beat the Santa Claus Village crowds by staying directly onsite.

Best Areas to Stay in Rovaniemi

Wondering where to stay in Rovaniemi to make the most of your trip? Here’s a quick guide to the main areas:

🎅 Santa Claus Village

If you’re visiting for Christmas charm, reindeer rides, and to feel a sense of childhood wonder – stay here. You’ll be steps away from Santa’s Post Office, souvenir shops, and plenty of family-friendly restaurants. Aurora hotels are common in this area too!

Best for: families, couples, and anyone chasing holiday spirit year-round.

Stay at: Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle, Nova Skyland Hotel, or Santa Claus Holiday Village.

🏙 Rovaniemi City Center

Right in the heart of town, this area is great if you want easy & walkable access to restaurants, bars, and local culture – plus shorter transfers to the airport and tours.

Best for: solo travelers, short stays, or those visiting without a car.

Stay at: Arctic Light Hotel, Arctic City Hotel, or Haawe Boutique Apart Hotel.

⛰ Ounasvaara

A beautiful hilly area just across the river from the city center – ideal for outdoor lovers. You’ll find ski slopes, forest trails, and cozy cabins with stunning views.

Best for: nature lovers and adventure seekers, or anyone wanting a quieter stay.

Stay at: Arctic TreeHouse Hotel or Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara

🌲 Surrounding & Just Outside of Rovaniemi City Center

If your dream is peace, quiet, and uninterrupted views of the aurora, stay slightly outside town. You’ll need a car or arranged transfers, but the trade-off is total serenity and darker skies.

Best for: aurora hunters, couples, and anyone craving an off-grid Arctic escape.

Stay at: Apukka Resort or Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos

Best Luxury Stays in Rovaniemi

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel

Sleek Scandinavian design meets fairy-tale forest views for a luxurious stay (umm, yes please!). I was so obsessed with the design and cozy vibes that I literally bought a replica faux-fur blanket when I got home that was similar to the blankets they had here.

And in case that wasn’t enough, each suite has floor-to-ceiling windows facing north – perfect for Northern Lights spotting right from bed. It truly was an UNREAL stay and I loved that this felt like you were actually in nature & away from people. So if you like it quieter and not feel like your neighbors are too close – this should be your pick.

    Apukka Resort

A luxury experience that is SO worth it – it was actually my FAVORITE place to stay during my 2-week Finland trip! Apukka has multiple options from glass igloos to Aurora cabins (where I stayed) to lakeside apartments and even a villa that is perfect for a large group or family.

One of my favorite parts about staying at Apukka is their multitude of winter adventures right onsite – you can do everything from a husky sled dog ride to a snowmobile safari to (of course) an aurora-chasing tour. Definitely take advantage of the on-site tours!

The only downside of staying here is that the cabins & igloos are pretty close together, so it’s not super private (but the windows do have big covers if you do want privacy).

Tip: make at least one reservation for the on-site Kota Restaurant – it’s a wooden teepee-style building with a central fire where you’ll be served a three-course, locally-inspired meal. It felt very cozy and family style – it was SO worth it imo! You might not need a reservation for the larger on-site restaurant Aitta but I’d still recommend it to be safe.

Arctic Snow Hotel & Glass Igloos

A true bucket-list, luxury stay. You can actually sleep in a room made entirely of ice (it’s cold but you’ll be SO happy you had the experience!). You’ll get a warm sleeping bag and a room to store your stuff in. But if that’s not your speed, you can stay in their glass igloos with 360° sky views (I am SO doing this next time!).

Even if you don’t end up staying here, make sure you come and visit the ice bar – you’ll pay a small fee to walk around the ice rooms & sculptures but it’s worth it just for the bar. You can try local liquors and when you’re done, you can literally smash your ice glass on the wall – so fun!

Best Mid-Budget Stays in in Rovaniemi

    Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle

These are beautiful, surprisingly spacious igloos with private saunas and heated glass roofs. You’ll be able to cozy up and watch the Northern Lights from bed!

The igloos are located near Santa Claus Village – great if you want a touch of luxury without breaking the bank, and you aren’t quite SO up close with the village (but it’s still walkable). There’s an onsite restaurant and a buffet breakfast that was actually quite good!

    Nova Skyland Hotel

Just a short walk from Santa Claus Village, these stylish Nordic suites come with kitchenettes – so if you want to save a bit on eating out each night, you can cook for yourself here! This is really great for families wanting more space & flexibility, or for longer stays.

The best part? Each suite comes with its own sauna! This was absolutely the deciding factor for me when considering more of a mid-budget stay – other hotels have saunas but with steep booking fees.

    Arctic Light Hotel

Arctic Light Hotel is a chic, boutique hotel in the city center with cozy rooms and one of the best breakfasts in town (no really!). This is a perfect stay for anyone wanting to stay in the heart of the city and have restaurants and tour offices in an easy, walkable distance.

I personally stayed here on my first and last nights as it was super easy to get to from the airport! But if you stay here the entire time, you really wouldn’t need a rental car at all (hello to saving on a rental car) as this is one of the hotels on many tours’ pick-up list.

Best Budget Stays in in Rovaniemi

    Santa Claus Holiday Village

Christmas lovers – this one is for you! Santa Claus Holiday Village has spacious cabins and apartments that are just STEPS away from Santa’s office. For me, the huge benefit of staying here is that you can beat the Santa Claus Village crowds as you’ll be first (and last!) onsite. Make sure to step back outside after dark – the lights looked even better than in daylight imo!

This is definitely a great value for families and couples alike and it truly is an iconic stay. The only downside is of course it can get a bit busy as it’s a hugely popular area for tourists!

    Arctic City Hotel

Comfortable, modern rooms in the center of Rovaniemi – ideal if you want restaurants and shops within walking distance. The breakfast buffet was really good – I loved the fresh berries and smoked salmon!

You really can’t beat this location, and it’s SO easy to get to or from the airport too. There are even parking spots and EV charging stations – one of the few hotels with parking in town!

    Haawe Boutique Apart Hotel

These are design-forward apartments inspired by Lapland’s natural elements, right in downtown Rovaniemi – each one is a little bit different! And they are truly STUNNING, let me tell you! And of course make sure to take advantage of the sauna!

I stayed here during the first half of a recent Finland trip, so I could be closeby to everything downtown, save on food by cooking my own meals, and by staying here I also saved a bit by not having a rental car for the first half of my trip.

BUT if you DO have a rental car, this is one of the few places in town with parking – there’s a decent-sized lot just across the street!

Best Hotels for Aurora Viewing in Rovaniemi

Let’s be honest – one of the biggest reasons you’re here is to see the Northern Lights, right? These hotels give you the best chance of catching them (sometimes even without leaving your bed!).

✨ Arctic TreeHouse Hotel – huge glass windows in every suite mean you can watch the sky glow green while sipping cocoa in bed.

✨ Apukka Resort – offers guided aurora hunts, glass-roofed cabins, and even Aurora sleigh rides.

✨ Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos – built specifically for Northern Lights viewing with 360° sky visibility.

✨ Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle  – private glass igloos with heated roofs (essential!) so you won’t miss a single flicker.

Tips for Visiting Rovaniemi, Finland in Winter

Download an Aurora app – try My Aurora Forecast or Aurora Alerts to track activity in real time.

Check the weather app DAILY – conditions change fast in Lapland! Bonus tip: check a local Finnish weather station instead of your own!

Get an eSIM – if you’re constantly checking the weather and aurora forecast, get an eSIM with unlimited data. My personal favorite & the one I used for my own Finland trip is Holafly – use code ROAMFREEREBECCA for 5% off any unlimited data plan!

Dress in layers – thermal base, fleece mid-layer, and waterproof outer layer. It gets cold.

Book in advance – hotels (especially glass igloos) sell out months ahead in winter.

Watch winter road conditions – roads can be icy, and daylight is short, so plan your driving carefully.

Expect limited daylight – in December, you might only get a few hours of twilight – but it’s magical for photos. In March, you’ll have a lot more daylight hours.

Seeing the Northern Lights isn’t guaranteed – even in Rovaniemi! Stay at least 3–5 nights for your best chance.

Credit cards are widely accepted – you won’t need much cash; Finland is almost entirely card-based (but if you do use cash, Finland uses the Euro!).

The language barrier is minimal – most Finns speak excellent English, so getting around is easy, but as always, it’s nice to learn a few phrases in the local language – your efforts will be appreciated!

To take epic winter photos –  check out my full winter photography guide here . For aurora specific shooting, you’ll want a tripod and either a newer model smartphone or a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a fast, wide angle lens (check out my full photo gear list here). Make sure to pack extra batteries, as the cold saps them quickly, and it’s smart to have a headlamp as well!

Rovaniemi is truly one of those places that feels like stepping inside a snow globe. Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate under the aurora, cozying up in a glass igloo, or visiting Santa himself, there’s something wildly magical about it.

There’s a perfect stay waiting for you here – and trust me, waking up in the Arctic Circle is an experience you’ll never forget. So bundle up, grab your camera for the aurora, and get ready for one of the dreamiest adventures of your life.
