20 Magical Things to Do in Cappadocia, Turkey (Hot Air Balloons, Cave Hotels & More!)

What to Know Before Visiting Cappadocia

📍 Where is Cappadocia?
Cappadocia is a region in central Turkey, located in the province of Nevşehir. It’s famous for its dramatic landscapes, shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions and thousands of years of erosion. The area includes small towns like Göreme, Ürgüp, and Avanos, each offering its own charm and access to nearby wonders.

☀️ When to Visit Cappadocia?
The best time to visit Cappadocia is spring (April–June) and fall (September–October). The weather is mild, the skies are usually clear for balloon rides, and the hiking trails are at their most beautiful. Summer can be hot (and crowded), while winter offers snowy magic—but balloon flights are more weather-dependent.

📅 How Long to Visit Cappadocia?
To truly soak in the magic, plan to spend at least 3 full days here. That gives you time for a balloon ride, a few hikes, cultural experiences, and a little chill time at a cave hotel. If you’re a photography or adventure enthusiast, you might want even more time, possibly closer to 5 days, to ensure that you see the hot air balloons at least once and have plenty of time to do some of the longer hikes in the area.

✈️ How to get to Cappadocia?
There are two main airports nearby: Nevşehir (NAV) and Kayseri (ASR). You can fly into either from Istanbul (and sometimes Izmir); and from there it’s just a 30–60 minute drive from to the main towns. Many cave hotels offer airport transfers too!

🚗 How to Get Around Cappadocia?
Renting a car is the best way to explore at your own pace, especially if you’re planning on visiting more remote spots like underground cities or valleys. If not, local tours and shuttles can get you to most of the highlights. And for short distances, taxis and hotel-arranged rides work well too.

🏠️ Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Staying in a cave hotel is part of the magic of a Cappadocia trip – and to be closest to most items on this list of the best things to do in Cappadocia, I’d recommend staying in Göreme specifically.

  • Budget: Charming Cave Hotel – family-run, friendly, and authentic with beautiful cave rooms and located in the heart of Göreme.
  • Mid-range: Mithra Cave Hotel – the stunning private terrace I took my hot air balloon photos from (!) or Sultan Cave Suites – the ICONIC rooftop balloon photo spot with cozy cave rooms.
  • Luxury: Museum Hotel– a splurge-worthy cave hotel with stunning panoramic views, hot air balloon views, and even a peacock or two walking the grounds (!).

20 BEST Things to do in Cappadocia:

1. Take a Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

2. Discover Cave Dwellings in Pasabag (Monk’s Valley)

3. Wander through the Ancient Underground Cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli

These mind-blowing subterranean cities were built thousands of years ago to protect locals from invasions. With tunnels, storage rooms, and even churches carved underground, it feels like a real-life fantasy novel. Derinkuyu is the deepest, while Kaymakli is more expansive.

4. Watch the Sunset Over Red Valley or at Panoramic View Point

Red Valley lives up to its name—especially at golden hour when the rocks glow fiery orange. If you’re short on time, Panoramic View Point is easily accessible and still absolutely stunning. Make sure to come early to save a spot at this popular sunset location, bring snacks, and stay for the whole sunset show.

5. Visit the Göreme Open Air Museum

The Göreme Open Air Museum is A UNESCO World Heritage site filled with rock-cut churches and ancient frescoes. The Dark Church is a standout highlight with its vivid biblical artwork. Come early or late to avoid the crowds, and enjoy the centuries-old quiet.

6. Shop at Galerie Ikman, the Famous Carpet Shop & Photo Spot

Galerie Ikman can be a bit on the touristy side — but it’s also iconic. The rich colors, stacked carpets, and hanging textiles make this a top spot for Insta-worthy shots. Just be respectful, and make a small purchase or pay the photo fee if you’re snapping away. If you REALLY want to lean into the vibes of this place, book a full photoshoot with a local photographer here!

7. Hike Through Rose Valley

One of Cappadocia’s most scenic hikes, Rose Valley is named for its blush-colored rock formations. The trail winds through orchards, cave churches, and narrow passages. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and great for solo explorers. The full hike is a bit long, but you can always do an out-and-back style hike that fits the length you’d like to do.

8. Watch the Balloons at Sunrise from Love Valley

Not into heights? No worries—you can still watch the hot air balloon magic from the ground. Love Valley is a local favorite for viewing – it’s stunning all on its own, so even if the balloons don’t fly that day, the sunrise is still worth it! Bring a thermos of Turkish tea and watch the sky fill with color—it’s pure joy.

9. See the Fairy Chimneys at the Zelve Open Air Museum

Zelve offers a more off-the-beaten-path version of Göreme’s open-air museum. You can walk among ancient homes, mosques, and tunnels, all carved into the stone. It’s less crowded and incredibly atmospheric.

10. Take a Cooking Class in Ayvali Village

Learn to make traditional Turkish dishes—like stuffed vine leaves or lentil soup—from a local family. These classes often include garden tours, stories, and shared meals. It’s a heartwarming, hands-on way to experience real Cappadocian hospitality.

11. Stay at a Cave Hotel

This is not your average hotel stay – staying at a cave hotel is one of the more unique experiences in Cappadocia – it’s a must! Sleeping in a centuries-old cave room with modern comforts? It’s equal parts cozy and adventurous. Don’t skip breakfast on the rooftop terrace—you’ll thank me later! If you are looking for the MOST iconic cave hotel, stay at Sultan Cave Suites for their epic hot air balloon terrace views!

12. Take a Sunset Horseback Ride

Cappadocia literally means “land of beautiful horses” in Persian, so a sunset trail ride  just feels right. Guided tours will take you through valleys and scenic overlooks – ending on the best view for sunset! Even if you are not an experienced rider, it’s very beginner-friendly.

13. Grab a Coffee at Hopper Coffee

14. Try Local Food at the Anatolian Kitchen

Hearty clay pot stews, stuffed eggplant, fresh flatbreads—this spot delivers on flavor and atmosphere. The prices are reasonable and the portions generous. Come hungry and curious!

15. Explore Pigeon Valley

Named for the thousands of pigeon houses carved into the cliffs, this peaceful valley offers sweeping views and a lovely hiking path. It connects Göreme and Uçhisar, so it’s perfect for a half-day adventure.

16. Treat Yourself to a Traditional Turkish Bath

After a few days of hiking and exploring, a hamam is just what you need. Head to Ürgüp Şehir Hamamı for an authentic, no-frills experience—or opt for a spa-style one in Göreme for something luxe. Steam, scrub, and float into bliss.

17. Eat Dinner at Dibek Restaurant

This family-run gem is tucked into a 475-year-old building and serves up the famous testi kebab—a slow-cooked meat and veggie stew sealed in a clay pot and cracked open at your table. Call ahead to reserve, because it takes hours to prepare!

18. Climb Uçhisar Castle

This ancient fortress offers the highest panoramic view in the region. It’s a bit of a climb, but the 360-degree views over the valleys are worth every step. Go for sunrise or sunset for an even more unforgettable experience.

19. Take a Pottery Class in Avanos

Families in Avanos have been crafting pottery for generations and if you want to try your hand at the wheel, take a pottery class here! Many studios offer quick intro classes, and you’ll even get to take home your handmade creation for a unique souvenir.

20. Do an Instagrammable Photoshoot

Let’s be honest—you came to Cappadocia with your Instagram feed in mind (you and me both!). Whether it’s flowy dresses at sunrise, rooftop balloon shots, or dramatic cave backdrops, this place is made for stunning photos. Many hotels even offer styling or in-house photographers if you want to go all-out. I’d recommend renting a dress locally – they are even MORE dramatic and epic than what you likely could find at home, and the rental price is less than you’d pay to purchase (plus you’ll leave room in your suitcase for more souvenirs, win-win!).

Cappadocia isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling. From the magic of sunrise balloon rides to the quiet wonder of hidden valleys, this region has a way of stirring your soul and making you feel wildly alive. Whether you’re here for adventure, culture, or just a dreamy escape, there’s no doubt: Cappadocia is the kind of place you’ll never forget.
