Paragliding Above Cape Town
You have not truly SEEN Cape Town until you have seen it from the air. Tandem paragliding above the city is one of those bucket list experiences that absolutely delivers – and then some.
Launching from Signal Hill or Lion’s Head (depending on wind conditions on the day), you’ll take a few running steps and suddenly you’re airborne. I was definitely a bit nervous going into it but the launch was NOT scary at all. And once you’re soaring high above Camps Bay, the Clifton Beaches, the V&A Waterfront, and with Table Mountain and Robben Island stretching out before you in every direction – you will actually just feel sooo peaceful! The flight lasts anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes depending on conditions, and trust me, every single second is absolutely wonderful.
The best part? No experience is required at all. You’re strapped securely to a fully qualified tandem instructor who handles absolutely everything – you just get to sit back, breathe in those INCREDIBLE views, and let the experience wash over you. It’s one of those times being a solo traveler is a 10/10! This was easily the highlight of my Cape Town trip.
My top tip: book as early in your trip as possible and stay flexible on dates – paragliding is weather-dependent and you’ll want buffer days in case of postponement. The operators are fantastic about keeping you updated via WhatsApp.

Kayaking with Dolphins in Table Bay
Launching directly from the iconic V&A Waterfront, you’ll paddle out into the Atlantic Ocean where the marine life here is simply UNREAL. We’re talking dolphins, seals, whales (seasonal), and even sunfish – and I saw dolphins within MINUTES of setting off. I literally watched a dolphin leap right alongside my kayak, close enough to hear them – and I genuinely cannot think of a more magical start to any Cape Town adventure.
The backdrop is equally spectacular – as you paddle, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, the dramatic Twelve Apostles mountain range, Table Mountain itself, and even a local shipwreck. The guides have a competitive kayaking background and are deeply knowledgeable about ocean safety, so no prior experience is needed whatsoever – the kayaks are extremely stable.
My top tip: book this for early morning when the ocean is calmest and wildlife activity is at its peak. It is, without question, one of the best things to do in Cape Town – full stop.

Swimming with Penguins at Boulders Beach
African penguins in Cape Town – it genuinely doesn’t get more surreal or more ADORABLE than this. Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is home to a thriving colony of endangered African penguins, and getting up close with these little characters is one of those experiences you’ll be talking about for years. It absolutely is a core memory for me!
This full-day tour takes you on a scenic journey down the Cape Peninsula, stopping along Chapman’s Peak Drive (one of the most spectacular coastal roads on the planet), the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and eventually Boulders Beach itself. The granite boulders create sheltered little coves where the penguins waddle, nest, and swim – and you can actually get in the water with them in certain areas. Honestly? Pinch me.
Along the way you’ll also have opportunities to spot baboons, ostriches, and other Cape Peninsula wildlife, visit the Cape of Good Hope for a photo at the legendary sign, and ride the funicular up to the Cape Point Lighthouse for panoramic ocean views. It is a genuinely action-packed full day that covers some of the most incredible scenery in all of South Africa.
My top tip: try to visit the penguins during low tide if you want to swim with them. Also, bring a windproof layer – the Cape can be seriously breezy!

Watching Sunset From Table Mountain
Table Mountain is Cape Town’s crown jewel and MOST iconic sight. If you do NOTHING else on your Cape Town trip, you cannot miss sunset here – watching the sun dip below the horizon from its summit is one of the most spectacular sights you will ever witness in your life. This is a do not miss experience!
This guided hike takes you up Lion’s Head or Table Mountain specifically timed for either sunrise or sunset – and I cannot recommend the sunset option enough. The mountain turns golden, the Atlantic Ocean glows, the city lights begin to twinkle below you, and the entire sky transforms into this insane palette of pinks, oranges, and purples. It is completely overwhelming in the best possible way. If a hike isn’t your scene, you can just take the cable car up for 360 views!
If you’re feeling adventurous, Lion’s Head is a particularly iconic sunset hike – the circular trail wraps around the peak with breathtaking views of Table Mountain on one side and the city and ocean on the other. Having a knowledgeable guide with you not only ensures your safety on the trail but also means you’ll get all the context about the mountain’s geology, ecology, and significance that you’d otherwise miss.
My top tip: dress in layers – temperatures drop significantly at altitude after sunset, and you’ll want to be comfortable for the descent. And do NOT forget to book early, especially for sunset slots – these fill up fast, for a VERY good reason.

Doing a Shark Cage Diving Experience
Gansbaai is known as the Great White Shark capital of the world – the waters here are teeming with them, attracted by the enormous Cape Fur Seal colony at nearby Dyer Island. You’ll board a boat with expert marine guides who know these waters inside out, head out to ‘Shark Alley’, and then take turns descending into the cage as sharks cruise past just inches away.
It is breathtaking. It is humbling. And honestly? It is not nearly as terrifying as you might imagine – the guides are incredibly professional and the experience is very well managed. Whether you’re a certified diver or have never snorkeled in your life, this experience is completely accessible – all ages and swim levels are welcome.
My top tip: take seasickness medication the night before and morning of if you have any sensitivity to boat motion – the waters can be choppy and you’ll want to be feeling 100% to fully enjoy this incredible experience.

Learning How to Cook Malay Cuisine in Bo-Kaap
Not every great Cape Town experience has to be about adrenaline – and this Cape Malay cooking class in the iconic Bo-Kaap neighborhood is proof that some of the most unforgettable travel moments happen around a kitchen table.
Bo-Kaap is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in all of South Africa – you’ve absolutely seen those brightly colored houses on your Instagram feed, for a good reason. This historic Cape Malay quarter is the heart of Cape Town’s Muslim community, with a rich cultural heritage dating back centuries. And the FOOD here? Absolutely extraordinary.
On this cooking class, you’ll join a local host to learn the art of Cape Malay cuisine – a beautifully aromatic fusion of Indonesian, Malaysian, and South African influences. Think warming spices, slow-cooked curries, fragrant rice dishes, and indulgent milk tarts. You’ll cook, you’ll laugh, you’ll learn, and then you’ll sit down and devour everything you just made together. It is the perfect combination of cultural immersion and delicious food.
My top tip: don’t eat a big breakfast before this one – you will want every bit of appetite available to you when lunch is served. This experience is SO worth it as a solo traveler – the intimate group setting makes it incredibly easy to connect with fellow adventurers.

Taking a Sunset Catamaran Cruise
If you ask me what the PERFECT Cape Town evening looks like, it is absolutely this: a sunset catamaran cruise across Table Bay, glass of bubbles in hand, with Table Mountain glowing golden behind you and the ocean stretching endlessly ahead. I mean, come on.
This sunset cruise departs from the V&A Waterfront and heads out onto the sparkling waters of Table Bay as the sun begins its descent. You’ll be treated to some of the most spectacular views of Cape Town’s iconic skyline and Table Mountain that you can possibly get – this is the golden hour view that photographers travel halfway across the world for, and you get to experience it while sipping something cold and delicious.
It is the perfect way to wind down after a big day of exploring, to celebrate a special occasion, or – honestly – just to treat yourself because you absolutely deserve it. The vibe is relaxed, the views are STUNNING, and the whole experience just feels gloriously indulgent in the best possible way. But the best part? Despite it feeling peak luxury, this is probably one of the MOST affordable sunset cruises you’ll ever take!
My top tip: book a few days into your trip rather than the first night – that way you’ll already know Cape Town a little and you’ll be able to recognize all the landmarks as they glow in the evening light. Makes it extra special!

Go on a Big Five Sunset Game Drive Safari
Aquila Game Reserve offers an incredible safari experience within easy striking distance of the city, and this sunset game drive is nothing short of magical. Set against the backdrop of the Karoo wilderness, with the light fading and the landscape turning amber and gold, you’ll be tracking lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and hippos from an open game vehicle with an expert ranger guiding the experience.
The sunset timing is absolutely PERFECT for wildlife viewing – animals are most active during the golden hour as the temperature drops, which means incredible sighting opportunities and the most spectacular photographic light you could ask for. Whether you’re a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, this experience is genuinely breathtaking.
My top tip: bring a telephoto lens or a phone with a great zoom if photography is important to you – the animals are well habituated to the vehicles and you’ll get some truly incredible shots. And layer up! It gets cold fast on an open vehicle once the sun goes down.

Cape Town is one of those rare destinations that genuinely has it ALL – and I hope this guide to the best tours in Cape Town has given you a clearer picture of just how extraordinary this city truly is. From kayaking with dolphins to soaring above the city to dining on Cape Malay cuisine in the heart of Bo-Kaap, every single one of these experiences is something I’d do again without a moment’s hesitation.
My biggest piece of advice? Book early. Cape Town’s best tours fill up fast – especially during peak season (October–April) – and you do NOT want to miss out on any of these. Lock in your spots before you go and arrive with an itinerary you’re genuinely excited about!
Have you visited Cape Town yet? Which of these tours are you adding to your bucket list first?! Drop a comment below – I would love to hear from you! And if you have any questions about planning your Cape Town trip, I’m always here to help.
Plan Your Cape Town Trip
✈️ Flights: Search for flights into Cape Town International Airport (CPT) via Skyscanner. Best connections from the US via Johannesburg, London, or Doha or direct from Washington Dulles, Newark, or Atlanta.
🏨 Hotels: Book your Cape Town hotel early — especially for peak season (December–February). Use Booking.com for flexible cancellation options.
🚗 Car Rental: Book through Discovercars.com for the best rates. Remember to drive on the left!
🎫 Activities: Pre-book Table Mountain Cable Car tickets, Robben Island Ferry, and Cape Point tours online to avoid queues. Always book early so they don’t sell out – I love using GetYourGuide for their 24-hour free cancellation policy.
🌍 Travel Insurance: Do not skip travel insurance for South Africa — I always recommend World Nomads for adventure travelers and SafetyWing for digital nomads.
📱 eSIM: Always stay connected by using an eSIM! You’ll have access to data WITHOUT having to spend a ton on your at-home plan, change your number, or buy a physical sim. My favorites are Airalo for affordable plans (save with my code “REBECCA3” for $3 off your first eSIM) and Holafly for unlimited data (use my code “ROAMFREEREBECCA” to save 5% on any plan!).
