What to Know Before Visiting
Kauai, Hawaii
📍 Where is Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai is the fourth-largest and northernmost of Hawaii’s main islands, located about 100 miles northwest of Oahu.
⏰ How long to visit Kauai, Hawaii
Give yourself at least 5 – 7 days to explore the Garden Isle. Kauai is smaller than the Big Island, but its rugged terrain means it can take a bit of time to fully explore. A week lets you balance adventure days and hiking with downtime and relaxing at the beach.
📅 When to visit Kauai, Hawaii
The island is gorgeous year-round, but April to June and September to November are truly the best times to visit as you’ll enjoy fewer crowds and great weather, whereas peak season is mid-June to mid-September, and mid-December to mid-April. Winter (December–March) can bring more rain, but it also means lush landscapes and prime whale-watching season.
☀️ What is the weather like in Kauai, Hawaii
One of the best things about Kauai is that it’s mostly a year-round destination. Kauai enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures hovering between 70-85°F (21-29°C) throughout the year. Trade winds keep things comfortable, especially near the coast, so it rarely feels unbearably hot.
🌦️ A quick breakdown by season:
Winter (November-March):
Slightly cooler, with more rain, especially on the North Shore, which is why it’s so lush and green. Surfing is epic this time of year, but swimming conditions can be rougher up north.
Summer (April-October):
Warmer, drier, and perfect beach weather across most of the island. The South Shore (Poipu) is especially sunny and calm, making it a favorite base in summer.
North vs. South Shore weather
North Shore: More rain, dramatic landscapes, waterfalls flowing at full force. Gorgeous, but pack a light rain jacket.
South Shore: Drier and sunnier year-round. If beach days are your priority, this area is hard to beat.
✈️ How to get to Kauai, Hawaii
You’ll fly into Lihue Airport (LIH), which connects directly to major US cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco. For other connections, you’ll likely fly through Oahu or Maui en route, as Lihue is a smaller Hawaiian airport.
🚗 How to get around Kauai, Hawaii
The best way to get around Kauai is to rent a car. Public transport is limited, and most of the best beaches, hiking trails, and viewpoints are spread across the island. However, Kauai is small enough that you can explore different regions even if your hotel is in just one.

Best Areas to Stay in Kauai, Hawaii
Poipu (South Shore): the most popular place to stay as it’s sunny, and has warm beaches with plenty of resorts and easy snorkeling. Perfect if you want consistent beach weather and the most sunshine!
Princeville & Hanalei (North Shore): ideal for lovers of lush landscapes and dramatic views. The most epic places to stay BUT there is more rainfall and fewer big resorts (which, upside, DOES also mean this area is a lot quieter and less busy than Poipu!).
Kapaa & Wailua (East Coast): central island location with fun eateries and easy access to both North and South – a great balance between being close to warm, sunny beaches, but also not too far from dramatic landscapes, lush rainforests, and epic hiking.
Waimea (West Side): a quieter base for exploring Waimea Canyon and rugged scenery – ideal if you want to be close to hiking areas and stay away from the crowds.

My Favorite Hotels in Kauai
For most visitors, Princeville or Poipu (I generally stay in Poipu!) are the best places to stay in terms of accommodation options and not being too far from most adventures around the island. Princeville on the North Shore boasts lush scenery and feels a bit more secluded, but can be more rainy. Poipu on the South Shore is very sunny and has more resorts and amenities. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, try Wailua or Lihue.
Here are some of my quick-pick, favorite places of where to stay in Kauai:
- Luxury: Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa – my absolute favorite hotel (I’ve stayed here three times now!) – it’s pure paradise complete with breathtaking ocean views, delicious high-end restaurants, shopping, multiple outdoor pools (with a bar and private cabanas!), and the hotel’s own incredible beach. There’s even a spa, yoga classes, and more, and the staff is always wonderful.
- Mid-range: Kauai Shores Hotel – I love this one for its exceptional beachfront views and amenities (my favs are the grocery store & firepit). There are also two outdoor pools and a restaurant with local cuisine & spectacular ocean views.
- Budget: Kauai Beach House Hostel – especially great for solo travelers and quite budget-friendly. There’s a community terrace to socialize with other travelers, and easy access to surfing, hiking, and local eats.

Best Luxury Stays in Kauai
Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: this aforementioned hotel (can you tell it’s my favorite?!) is perched on Poipu Beach and is pretty much island luxury at its finest. There are verdant, sprawling grounds, multiple pools (even a dedicated adults-only pool, swim-up bar, and private cabanas), a lazy river, easy and walkable beach access, a relaxing spa (definitely recommend a massage here), and all the amenities you could dream of. The Grand Hyatt is perfect for honeymooners or anyone who wants a luxury resort escape.
Ko’a Kea Resort: intimate luxury right on the beach with delicious on-site dining and a boutique feel that’s perfect for couples.
Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort: a truly great value luxury option on Coconut Beach with ocean views, a pool, and easy access to the rest of the island.

Best Eco-Friendly Stays in Kauai
Kauai’s beauty is worth protecting, and there is one standout accommodation that will let you enjoy it responsibly while still indulging in luxury. Here’s where to stay in Kauai to stay eco-friendly:
1 Hotel Hanalei Bay : luxurious yet sustainable – my top pick! Located along the stunning Napali coast and offering direct beach access, it’s LEED-certified and deeply committed to sustainability, from water systems to waste reduction. There are also amazing amenities from a large outdoor swimming pool with swim-up bar, a full-service spa, gourmet dining, fitness facilities and easy access to local adventures and activities (the concierge can arrange all sorts of tours – from helicopter rides to scuba diving and more!).
Other smaller eco-lodges or farm stays around Kauai focus on green practices and supporting local culture and land stewardship – which are perfect if you want to minimize your footprint while exploring the island’s wild side.
Best All-Inclusives in Kauai
A caveat here: Kauai doesn’t actually have the classic huge all-inclusive resorts you’ll find in the Caribbean, but some properties FEEL like all-inclusive with on-site pools, activities, and meals:
Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: with its multiple restaurants, luau nights, and activities, you can easily fill your days without stepping off property.
Many boutique resorts offer packages with meals, spa credits, or excursions – just ask when booking!

Best Mid-Budget Stays in Kauai
Kauai Shores Hotel: right on the beach in Kapaa, this colorful hotel has a relaxed Hawaiian feel and puts you steps from sand and surf. It’s a great base if you want easy access to walks, shops, and eating spots along the east coast of the isle. Expect comfortable rooms, a pool, and a lively beach club vibe without resort-level prices.
The Kauai Inn: a historic boutique hotel perfectly located near Lihue. This was actually established as the island’s first hotel in 1890 (!) and it remains one of Kauai’s enduring landmarks, blending island charm with modern amenities for visitors seeking comfort. Clean rooms, a nice pool, and quick access to nearby beaches and restaurants make this a solid mid-range pick. Perfect if you plan to explore all corners of the island by car.
Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay: an excellent pick with convenient access to Kauai’s eastern “Coconut Coast.” It has big-brand comfort and an ocean-adjacent pool, but it is much more approachable than full-blown luxury rates.

Best Budget-Friendly in Kauai
Even though Kauai isn’t exactly a budget island, there are cozy and wallet-friendly options that still feel like home:
Local inns and boutique hotels in Kapaa – they’re central and usually easier on the wallet than big resort zones.
Vacation rentals or smaller properties with kitchens – perfect for saving on meals and feeling like a local.
Look for smaller beachfront motels or B&Bs if you want simple comfort without the white-linen resort price tag.

Tips for Visiting Kauai
Plan & book ahead. Kauai is popular year-round, and the best stays – especially beachfront – book up early.
Help protect the land and oceans. Use reef-safe sunscreen, carry reusable water bottles, and leave no trace at beaches and hikes. The island’s ecosystems are fragile and worth protecting for future generations and current residents.
Pack for rain and shine. Kauai is lush for a reason – rain showers can happen even on sunny days, so bring a lightweight rain jacket alongside your beachwear and stay hydrated on hot, sunny days.
Be culturally aware & respectful. Hawaii has a long and complicated history with the mainland USA but you can still visit ethically & responsibly by following these guidelines (as written by the Hawaii tourism board!). Key points: be mindful of local culture & history, help conserve fragile land and coral, support local, and respect wildlife.
From the luxury resorts of Poipu to the sustainable beauty of Hanalei Bay, and the cozy, budget-friendly spots in Kapaa, there’s a perfect home base for every kind of traveler!
