5 Best Excursions in Puerto Rico For an Unforgettable Trip

Puerto Rico is FULL of adventure – here are my top 5 favorite tours to help you explore everything this amazing island has to offer!
Puerto Rico is one of those dreamy places I just CANNOT get enough of. And this little island packs a punch – from stunning architecture to picturesque beaches to the ONLY tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and SO much more – Puerto Rico is truly an adventurous traveler’s dream.
The best part about Puerto Rico? US Citizens don’t need a passport to visit this incredibly diverse and culturally-rich Caribbean island!
I spent a week staying in San Juan and yet I still feel like I barely scratched the surface of all Puerto Rico has to offer, so I put together a list of the BEST excursions in Puerto Rico to help you explore as much as possible and maximize your time!

1. Walking tour of Old San Juan
If you do nothing else in Puerto Rico – you HAVE to explore beautiful, colorful Old San Juan: boasting sea views, amazing architecture, historic forts, and more. Since you’ll start your trip by flying into Luis Muñoz Marín International airport, head right over to Old Town San Juan – it’s just 15 minutes from the airport!
Beginning with an Old Town San Juan walking tour is the best way to get a feel for Puerto Rican culture and what this amazing island has to offer. Plus it’s always nice to stretch your legs after a long flight!
Take this tour led by an expert guide to learn all about the architecture, culture, and history of San Juan. OR if you end up getting into town a bit later in the day, check out this sunset walking tour instead for some absolutely beautiful evening views – or just to beat the heat of the day!
Enter your Puerto Rico dates below to check the availability for this walking tour:

2. Bioluminescent Bay Tour
If you are looking for a bucket-list worthy, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, you absolutely must swim in a BIOLUMINESCENT BAY (!). Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays (La Paguera, Vieques, and Fajardo), where you can kayak at night and see the incredible glow, but there’s just one bay where you are allowed to swim, so I’d recommend this bioluminescent bay tour in La Paguera.
You’ll get taken out for sunset, get to swim a bit, and then after dark you’ll swim in the bio bay and see the most incredible glow. Trust me, it is worth the drive from San Juan! I cannot think of a more memorable or unique experience, I cannot recommend it enough.
Check out when the tour is available below and make sure to book early because this tour is VERY popular and sells out!

3. Catamaran Snorkel & Sail Tour
The perfect day in Puerto Rico DOES exist, and it is this catamaran sail & snorkel tour. You’ll sail to an uninhabited island where you get to enjoy what feels like your own private beach (!), and then after a delicious lunch back on the catamaran you’ll get to snorkel and enjoy the ridiculously blue Puerto Rican waters. 10/10 I could not have loved this tour more.
Plan out your catamaran day below – and make sure to book early so you don’t miss out!

4. El Yunque Rainforest Waterfall Tour
Did you know El Yunque is the ONLY tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System?! If you love adventure travel, you can’t miss exploring here. I am always looking to hike and enjoy nature on my travels, and this rainforest and waterfall tour offers the best of everything – hiking, waterfalls, and even a natural WATERSLIDE to cool off after all that exploring!
Bonus: this tour will pick you up from San Juan AND includes your entrance fees to El Yunque National Forest – which is a super bonus offer because this rainforest is so popular you have to buy your ticket in advance, and they can sell out quickly!

5. Puerto Rican Food Tour
Puerto Rican food is NEXT-LEVEL good and to try it all, I’d highly recommend this San Juan foodie tour – it even includes a rum cocktail! But if drinks are more your style, check out this cocktail tour instead. Puerto Rican food is such a huge part of the culture and I loved getting to try so many different and delicious samples on this tour. Plus the guide had a ton to share about the architecture and history of Puerto Rico between stops so if you missed the Old San Juan walking tour or want to learn even more about Puerto Rican culture, this tour is for you!
Looking for Even More Puerto Rico Adventures?
Looking for even more adventures? There are a ton of tours I am dying to try next time (from horseback riding to an ATV adventure to a distillery tour) – discover all of these and more below:
Puerto Rico has so much to offer, whether you are an adventure traveler, a foodie traveler, or a cultural traveler. I hope you enjoy these tours as much as I did and you get a chance to discover why Puerto Rico is such an incredible, must-visit destination.

Plan Your Puerto Rico Trip
✈️ Flights: find cheap deals using Skyscanner – this is what I used to snag $200 tickets for my trip! For Puerto Rico you’ll fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).
🏠️ Accommodation: Easily compare prices, reviews, locations, and more with Booking.com – it’s how I personally find my budget-friendly accommodation! If you are a backpacker and looking to save even more, check out HostelWorld. THAT BEING SAID, Puerto Rico is SO worth splurging on an amazing stay, I stayed at the Caribe Hilton and it was SO WORTH IT! It was the PERFECT location for exploring all of these tours -15 min from the airport, just a few minutes from Old San Juan – and not to mention it has the dreamiest pool + beachfront combo to relax at after all of these adventures – book it here!
🚗 Transportation: For Puerto Rico the best form of transportation on the island is to rent a car. Get the best prices and availability by using RentalCars.com!
📸 Tours: Explore Puerto Rico with GetYourGuide – they have an incredible selection of tours as you saw from this blog post!
📶 Connection: Always stay connected by using an ESim – and for that I cannot recommend Airalo enough! You’ll have access to data WITHOUT having to spend a ton on your at-home plan, change your number, or buy a physical sim.
🗺️ Travel insurance: NEVER travel without insurance! Here’s why. I recommend World Nomads for adventure travel as it covers a lot of high-risk sports (like some of the adventures mentioned in this blog post!) and covers your gear too, or SafetyWing for longer trips as it’s less expensive for long-term and/or multi-country travel (and it’s especially great for digital nomads!).
