Puerto Rico 7 Day Itinerary: Definitive Travel Guide for First Time Visitors
Quick Puerto Rico Travel Guide
Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located east of the Dominican Republic.
🇵🇷 Is Puerto Rico a part of the United States
Puerto Rico is officially an unincorporated territory of the United States – and as of now you do NOT need a passport as a US citizen to visit!
📅 How long to visit Puerto Rico
5-7 days is the ideal amount of time to spend in Puerto Rico – but you could definitely fit a lot in in 3 days or spend up to 2 weeks+ fully exploring the island!
☀️ When to visit Puerto Rico
For warm (but not too hot) weather and limited rainfall, visit in high season in mid-December to mid-April, but to avoid the crowds, visit in shoulder season in May – June, although be aware Puerto Rico’s rainy season is April – November and June – August tends to be the hottest months.
✈️ How to get to Puerto Rico
Arrive to Puerto Rico by airplane or by taking a cruise ship. The biggest and easiest airport to fly into is the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, commonly known as the San Juan Airport (SJU).
🚗 How to get around Puerto Rico
In Old San Juan, you can easily just get around by walking, or you can take an Uber (note: Uber is only available in San Juan). For getting around the whole island, it’s best to rent a car. There are also taxis and shuttles around the island, and hotel shuttles for getting to/from the airport.
🏠️ Where to stay in Puerto Rico
For your first trip to Puerto Rico, I would recommend staying in and basing your explorations around San Juan. On my first trip, I stayed at Caribe Hilton and it was INCREDIBLE – not only were the rooms and pool beautiful, but the hotel even has its own beach. The Hilton also has a few different restaurants and can help you arrange transport and tours for your trip so it made everything really easy.
For those on a tighter budget, I’d recommend Mar Del Norte, which has a kitchenette in each room, so you can save further by cooking meals at your accommodation if desired. cabins and cottages – perfect for those looking for a private beach and incredible views. Bonus: every month they organize a full-moon party!

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Exploring Old San Juan
Start your Puerto Rico adventure by spending the day in Old San Juan – grab a taxi/Uber/or your rental car to get to Old San Juan, but once you’re there it’s VERY easy to just walk around and explore. To experience all the best sights, I’d recommend this walking tour – which will save you some time having to plan and figure out each stop.
If you want to put together your own personal walking tour, here are some of my favorite sights and recommendations in Old San Juan:
- Umbrella Street San Juan (Fortaleza Street) – which depending on the time of year has different art displays hanging above the street; umbrellas, flags, or other decor. You can check with the tourism board to see what art is currently on display.
- Hotel El Convento – beautiful & historic hotel, painted yellow and white
- El Castillo San Felipe del Morro – a historic large large fortress and citadel
- Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery – colonial-era cemetery & resting place of many of Puerto Rico’s most prominent natives and residents
- Calle del Cristo – cobblestone streets and colorful houses
- Plazuela La Rogativa – great view of the San Juan harbor
- Fuente Raices Fountain – and the tree-lined promenade that leads up to it
- I Love PR Sign – a great place to take a fun tourist photo, located by the harbor
- Plaza de Armas – one of the city squares that dates back to Spanish colonial times
- Plazuela La Rogativa – most scenic plaza in San Juan, with full 180-degree views of the San Juan bay, El Yunque in the distance, & more
- Museo de las Americas – museum celebrating the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico and the Americas
- Plaza Colon – one of the most important plazas in historic times, full of statues, art, and restaurants

Wrap up your Old San Juan explorations by trying some of the INCREDIBLE food Puerto Rico has to offer – this walking food tour is an absolute MUST, and if you can’t make it fit in your schedule, at least try some traditional dishes like mofongo.
If you still have some adventure left in you today, check out Puerto Rico’s incredible nightlife – go for some salsa dancing, visit a bar for delicious drinks (or try this cocktail experience tour), hang out at a low-key beach bar, or party it up at a hotel nightclub.
I’d recommend checking out Condado, Calle Loíza, or La Placita de Santurce, which is a farmers market by day that transforms into a street party at night, complete with live music, restaurants, and late-night bars. I personally had a chance to experience a live concert & drinks at Distrito T-Mobile and had an absolute BLAST! Do not miss out on Puerto Rican nightlife!

Day 3: Day trip to El Yunque
Grab your keys and jump in your rental car to take a full or half-day trip out to El Yunque National Forest. El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system, and it’s home to waterfalls, stunning vistas, epic hikes, and clear mountain rivers – it’s a must-see!
One important note: because of limited parking and high interest in visitation, you MUST either book a tour or purchase a ticket in advance from the National Parks Service. Generally tickets are available one month in advance, but if you miss that, the parks service also releases new tickets for the following day at 8am EST and 11am EST for the entry times of 8-11am and 11am-2pm.
With tickets in hand, start your El Yunque adventure in the early morning and head out on a hike before the day gets too hot – Puente Roto, El Yunque Peak Tower, and Las Pailas are all great options for a first hike.

Pack a picnic lunch or stop in one of the visitor centers for lunch after your hike, and then go waterfall chasing in the afternoon to cool off as the heat picks up. My favorite waterfalls in El Yunque are La Coca Falls, Las Tinajas Falls, and Cascada La Mina (currently closed after hurricane damage, so please check the latest trail closures and information before heading out on any hikes).
If you don’t have a rental car or missed your opportunity to get a ticket to the park, check out one of my FAVORITE El Yunque tours, where you get to hike to a waterfall AND enjoy a natural waterslide – (umm yes please)! Tickets to El Yunque sell out FAST because the park is so popular, so make sure to book the tour or grab your own tickets well before you visit. This tour is a TON of fun and it’s great for solo travelers too who are looking to meet some other adventure-lovers!

Day 4: Full Day Catamaran Sail
After a jam-packed last two days, it’s time to relax with a full day catamaran sail. This catamaran tour was one of my absolute favorite experiences in Puerto Rico – it was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, as we visited the small uninhabited island Icacos for a few hours of beach relaxation & ocean swimming, then had a fresh & delicious lunch on board, before heading to a new spot to snorkel in crystal clear waters, and danced to music on the way back to port.
If you did nothing else on this itinerary, please at least treat yourself to this amazing day out on the water! The perfect part about a full-day sail is you’re able to choose whether you want to fully relax and hang out on board on or on the beach, or you can choose to make it just as adventurous as you’d like. The ocean is just so stunning in Puerto Rico, it’s definitely well worth getting out to swim, snorkel, sail, paddle board, or whatever sounds best to you!
Read this next!

If a catamaran sail isn’t in your budget, I’d highly recommend an alternative plan of spending a full day at the beach – see my recommendations for day 6. And then on day 6 instead of visiting the same beach again, I’d recommend you visit a new beach, enjoy the pool at your hotel, or use this as a bonus day to head to anything you missed out (more adventures in Old San Juan, having a nightlife adventure, doing a food tour, etc).

Day 5: Spending the Day & an Epic Evening in La Parguera
Get your day started early – it’ll be a three hour drive to La Parguera so use your rental car, a prearranged shuttle, or taxi to get out to this seaside fishing village. Note: there will likely be tolls along your route, so come prepared with either change in hand or make sure your rental car has a toll tag (I opted to pre-pay for this option!).
Once you arrive in town, start your marine-themed day by exploring mangroves, coral reefs, and crystal-clear waters in a waterbike – I’d HIGHLY recommend this exact tour, which is eco-friendly & has minimal impact on the environment to help protect and preserve the fragile ecosystems of La Parguera. Waterbikes not your speed? Try this kayak tour instead to get a bit closer into the water!
After your waterbike adventure, sample some of the local food – Puerto Rico has some of the most delicious seafood and tropical fruits I’ve tried! I’d recommend Restaurant El Karacol on the waterside for their fresh seafood (try the lobster mofongo!) and their sangria made with local fruits. For more laid-back fare, head over to Isla Cueva Beer & Burger Bar for Puerto Rico crafted beers on tap and yummy burgers – they’ve even got two different types of seafood burgers to choose from!

Once you’ve had a chance to get some food, get ready for one of the most memorable and unique adventures you will EVER try – because La Parguera is home to Lajas, one of the three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico (along with Laguna Grande in Fajardo and Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island). Trust me, this alone is worth the drive out! Lajas is unique from the other two bays because you are actually allowed to SWIM in the waters, an experience unlike any other. Take this tour to enjoy a sunset swim before swimming in a bioluminescent bay after dark (!!!) – one of the most UNFORGETTABLE adventures I’ve EVER done in the 40+ countries I’ve visited. Drive back to San Juan after your adventure or opt to spend the night in La Parguera and drive back tomorrow.

Day 6: Relax at the Beach (or Pool!)
It’s the last day in Puerto Rico – where did the time go?! Spend your final day relaxing at the beach to finally slow down and soak up as much Caribbean sun as you can. Many hotels recommend Condado Beach BUT I’d say skip it because there are much better beaches close to San Juan! If you ARE staying in the Condado area though and don’t want to go far, I’d recommend Playita del Condado for calmer waves (Condado Beach can have dangerous waters!).
El Escambron Beach is one of my favorites and is the perfect place for swimming; it’s got a protected cove area and an added bonus is that the beach overall is huge – allowing you to find your own slice of paradise.

Since I was already staying there, I actually ended up spending most of my beach time at the Caribe Hilton’s personal beach, it’s right by their gorgeous pool and has a good mix of sand, grass, shade, and sun. But no matter what beach you choose in San Juan, you’re sure to have a beautiful day!

Day 7: Say goodbye and fly home
Sadly all the good times have to end at some point, so on day 7 it is officially time to bid Puerto Rico goodby and head home! Hopefully at this point you’ve had your fill of sunshine, Puerto Rican food, and more, and you’re planning your trip back asap because there’s definitely so much more this island has to offer on a return visit!
If you have a little MORE or a little LESS time in Puerto Rico and can’t make a 7 day itinerary work, just scroll down because I’ve got some further recommendations for you as a bonus!

What about a Puerto Rico 5 Day Itinerary?
- Day 1, arrive in Puerto Rico, flying into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, AKA the San Juan Airport (SJU).
- Day 2, explore Old San Juan during the day and at night do a food tour or enjoy Puerto Rico’s incredible nightlife.
- On day 3, do a HALF-day trip out to El Yunque in the morning to hike and explore waterfalls, and in the evening, drive out to La Parguera and jump on a tour to swim in the bioluminescent bay at night, or visit the closer Fajardo Bay and kayak in the bioluminescent waters instead.
- For day 4, pick between the catamaran tour and a beach day.
- And on day 5, head back home.
Have more time to spend in Puerto Rico?
Here are optional add-on adventures for
this trip or a future visit:
- Spend a few days on Puerto Rico’s West Coast; feel the relaxed surfer vibes and visit some of the best beaches on the entire island. Make sure you stop in Rincón, a 3-hour drive from San Juan on the west side of Puerto Rico, which has incredible snorkeling, surfing, historic lighthouses, and more.
- Visit the historic city of Ponce, a 90-minute drive from San Juan, as a day trip or spend a night or two in this charming southern city. Visit a castle (!), art museums, or even the nature reserve at Caja de Muertos.
- Fly out to Vieques Island for a few days to visit a pristine wildlife refuge, see wild horses, and relax on beautiful beaches. Vieques is home to tons of adventure activities such as hiking, horseback riding, diving, sailing, and more. Be sure to check out the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay at night – it’s the brightest of the three bioluminescent bays!
- Explore the Puerto Rico Highlands (the Central Mountains), Puerto Rico’s interior mountainous region to enjoy epic hikes, tasty creole cuisine, sweeping views, and some of the BEST coffee you’ll find in all of Puerto Rico. There’s so much adventure to be found here and it is SO underrated – you can zipline on one of the longest ziplines in the world, go caving (and cave TUBING !), swim in rivers and waterfalls, go birdwatching, and at the end of it all even go rum tasting!
Puerto Rico is such a beautiful island and is so worth a visit! Once you’ve had a taste I’m sure you’ll be ready for another trip back to explore even more of what this amazing little island has to offer!

Looking for Even More Puerto Rico Adventures?
Looking for even more to do in Puerto Rico? There are a ton of tours and adventures I am dying to try next time. Puerto Rico has sooo much more to be discovered – get ideas below:
Plan Your Puerto Rico Trip
🏠️ Accommodation: Easily compare prices, reviews, locations, and more with Booking.com – it’s how I personally find my budget-friendly accommodation! If you are a backpacker and looking to save even more, check out HostelWorld. THAT BEING SAID, Puerto Rico is SO worth splurging on an amazing stay, I stayed at the Caribe Hilton and it was SO WORTH IT! It was the PERFECT location for exploring all of these tours -15 min from the airport, just a few minutes from Old San Juan – and not to mention it has the dreamiest pool + beachfront combo to relax at after all of these adventures – book it here!
🚗 Transportation: For Puerto Rico the best form of transportation on the island is to rent a car. Get the best prices and availability by using Discover Cars!
📸 Tours: Explore Puerto Rico with GetYourGuide – they have an incredible selection of tours as you saw from this blog post!
📶 Connection: Always stay connected by using an ESim – and for that I cannot recommend Airalo enough! You’ll have access to data WITHOUT having to spend a ton on your at-home plan, change your number, or buy a physical sim.
🗺️ Travel insurance: NEVER travel without insurance! Here’s why. I recommend World Nomads for adventure travel as it covers a lot of high-risk sports (like some of the adventures mentioned in this blog post!) and covers your gear too, or SafetyWing for longer trips as it’s less expensive for long-term and/or multi-country travel (and it’s especially great for digital nomads!).
