You are NEVER traveling alone. You are always meeting up with friends later, or your friend has the stomach flu today, or they're at the shops, something. The key part is someone is waiting for you!⁠

Usually accompanied with something like "oh it was dark" or "I'm so jetlagged can't remember" or literally just point in any direction and say "that way."⁠

🤥 "Yep I have a boyfriend/husband/partner"⁠
Whether or not you're even married, have a boyfriend, it doesn't matter. You can even wear a fake wedding ring if that helps you feel more secure! Bonus points your fake man is also waiting to meet up with you (circling back to the first lie)!⁠

🤥 "Oh I've been here before"⁠
It's always a good move to look more confident and knowledgable than you might actually be - so lie even if it's your first time somewhere! It's easier to take advantage of someone who is confused or unsure, so fake it until you make it!⁠

Deliver this one in your best anything accent, OR ... if you're feeling spicy say it with zero accent and VERY direct eye contact, and stare them down until it's awkward. Then leave.⁠

❌ Expecting everything to be on time - give yourself extra time to get places, you're on island time now (delays, traffic, & more)⁠

❌ Forgetting to sunscreen - not only is the Greek sun strong, but it reflects off white surfaces too⁠

❌ Not booking your hotel in advance - this is a VERY popular island so book early⁠

❌ Arriving in the dark - it can be very challenging to drive at night and find your hotel down a small road!⁠

❌ Not bringing an international driver's license to rent a car - for US citizens, I'd recommend grabbing one at AAA before you go!⁠

For the longest time, I held back on this big dream of mine to travel the world solo for a year. ⁠
⁠
I was afraid no one else would "get it" - why would I abandon a comfortable life for a year of unknowns, of firsts, of different beds each night? ⁠
⁠
I was afraid to do it all on my own. Having to make every decision myself, taking charge of planning it all out, having no one else to turn to if things got difficult.⁠
⁠
I was afraid how it would affect my relationships with my partner, my family, and my friends. Would my marriage fall apart if I was gone an entire year? How would I stay connected and how much would I miss out on?⁠
⁠
I was afraid of running out of money, and I was afraid of how it would affect my career. What would happen at the end of the year?⁠
⁠
Was I "selfish" for wanting to just LIVE my life to the fullest and put myself first for once? ⁠
⁠
The thing is, you won't ever truly know until you take a chance on your dreams. Until you jump right in and figure it out as you go. But I have a feeling - despite how terrifying it is - that it will all work out, and at the end of it all, you'll be glad you took a chance on yourself. So why not give it a shot?⁠ 💕
